Amidst all the unreasonable advice given on double-digit work hours, the need for Indians to focus on work life balance is at an all time high.

PEOPLE REGRET GIVING UP ON THEIR HEALTH

Meet Madhavan (Name changed)

Madhavan is a 40 year old IT professional.

Madhavan earns a meagre 10 Lakh per annum. Although his salary puts him in the top 10% of the country and far behind his peers who could make jumps in their career, Madhavan feels eternally stuck in an endless cycle of corporate samsara.

Madhavan works for at least 11 hours a day. Madhavan’s situation is all too familiar for many professionals across industries. Long hours, high expectations, and constant pressure can drain not only your physical energy but also your mental health. Without a healthy work-life balance, professionals often experience burnout, a decline in productivity, and a diminished quality of life. So, why is work-life balance so important?

If Madhavan continues to pour all his energy into his job without taking breaks or setting boundaries, he’s at high risk of burnout. Burnout is more than just exhaustion—it’s a state of physical, emotional, and mental fatigue that can leave someone feeling disengaged, unproductive, and even hopeless. The constant pressure of working long hours without adequate recovery time can lead to stress, anxiety, and depression.

I have to go for physiotherapy sessions at least twice a week. I have no time for that as well. The lower back pain is unbearable. Sometimes I feel like taking a break, but the industry may not accept me at this age with a career break

PEOPLE ARE IN NO POSITION TO DEMAND FOR WORK LIFE BALANCE

I cannot afford to lose my job. I work at a service-based company and I am easy replaceable. I just have to give in to their demands, no other way

Many have opined that they are easily replaceable. Most companies are able to find easy replacements in India for positions that required experienced people well within three years. Other jobs like those in billing and accounts are just being given out on a contract basis to suit cost-cutting measures.

POOR WORK LIFE BALANCE CAN BE DANGEROUS

India is currently navigating through a phase where economic growth and productivity are valued more than ever. But as the demand for performance increases across industries, it’s becoming clear that well-being—specifically work-life balance —is being sacrificed at a cost too high to ignore.

From long hours in the office to high stress levels, India’s workforce is increasingly feeling the pressure, leading to health issues and a decline in overall happiness.

As a country, it’s time we rethink the way we view productivity and human well-being, especially when reports indicate that 25% of Indians are living with hypertension, a condition that is directly linked to high levels of stress. What’s worse, many individuals may not even be aware of the strain they are under until it’s too late.

This isn’t just a health issue—it’s an ethical one. People are the backbone of any organization, and without prioritizing their well-being, no amount of productivity will create a sustainable, thriving society.

In India, where long work hours are common and competitive environments push individuals to work harder, there is a serious disconnect between how employees are treated and what they truly need.

This imbalance is not only harmful to the individual, but also to the organization and society as a whole. When employees are overworked, stressed, and fatigued, they don’t bring their best selves to work. Instead, they bring exhaustion, burnout, and disengagement.

A lot can be done to improve WLB. The best way is to quit
